- The total collision energy of the LHC is 14 TeV, making it the most powerful particle accelerator in the world.
- The LHC is the most expensive scientific experiment in human history.
- The data flow from all four experiments will be about 700 MB/s, that is around 15 000 000 GB (=15 PB) per year, corresponding to a stack of CDs about 20 km tall each year. For comparison, every word spoken worldwide in one year, converted into text, would amount to 2-3 petabytes of data.
- Each beam will consist of nearly 3000 bunches of particles and each bunch will contain as many as 100 billion particles.
- If the protons and the neutrons were 10 cm across, then the quarks and electrons would be less than 0.1mm in size and the entire atom would be about 10 km across. More than 99.99% of the atom is empty space.
- On 10 September 2008, the proton beams were successfully circulated in the main ring of the LHC for the first time.
